Employee Spotlight: Shelbie Barker
At Continental Underwriters, Inc., our mission is to stand out as a company that offers quality, passion, and expertise to the insurance industry. We are able to do this through a close-knit team made up of caring, skilled professionals – and we want you to get to know them! This month we are spotlighting one of our newest additions, Shelbie Barker, who joined our team in September 2020 as an Underwriting Technician.
Shelbie is no newbie to insurance. She’s been in commercial insurance since 2014, where she got her start in the automobile insurance industry. Fueled by the desire to help customers in a more unique and personal way, she decided to make a switch. For her, Continental Underwriters, Inc. is the perfect place to get to know customers and create genuine connections, all while being part of a strong, empathetic team. Coming from a world of big business in which customers’ best interests can sometimes fall through the cracks, she says that “a big draw to Continental Underwriters, Inc. was the team. The leadership is very present, and they care about the greater good. Everyone wants what’s best for the customer.”
A typical day as an Underwriting Technician is a busy one! A lot of Shelbie’s role involves handling incoming submissions from brokers for potential policies, looking for any obvious underwriting red flags, handling loss runs requests between carriers and brokers and sending renewal requests. These responsibilities make her a key player when it comes to efficiently moving processes along.
One of the biggest differences between her time in automobile insurance and the forestry world is the nature of risks and the amount of moving parts. But Shelbie feels that those aspects just make her job more challenging and fun, and she doesn’t back away from a challenge. In fact, she says that her most difficult and rewarding professional experience prior to joining Contintental Underwriters, Inc. involved a long, tedious training program. After 11 weeks away from home as an auto adjuster working to complete a certification program in Virginia Beach and Ashburn, VA, she was one of few to finally make it to the end–and now, she says “that experience taught me that I can handle anything that comes my way.”
When she’s not working hard with customers and teammates, you can find Shelbie binging old episodes of American Horror Story, blasting the latest Five Finger Death Punch album, or flexing her photography muscles capturing special candid moments at a wedding or family portrait session. When she wants to really relax, you might even catch her hopping on a cruise to St. Thomas or daydreaming about owning her dream car, a Shelby GT-S Mustang!
One thing Shelbie wants people to know about the insurance industry is that it’s never boring. In her words, “It’s changing every day. Learning about new risks in the wood industry has been incredible and interesting. I’m excited to learn more and eventually tour a sawmill!”
