Name: Charles E. “Woody” Stanchina
Role: Production Underwriter
Time in This Role: 3.5 years
Career Path: I grew up in the insurance industry. I am, along with my two brothers, the fourth generation of insurance industry professionals in various arms of the business.
I went to VCU to get a degree in the Risk Management and Insurance track through the business school. While I was in school, I got involved with the professional insurance fraternity, Gamma Iota Sigma. I started asking about job and internship opportunities – and ultimately got an interview with CU for a position with the Risk Assessment department. Corey Bounds had just joined the company about two months prior, so they needed someone to help with his reports and scheduling, etc., from the different mills visited.
I spent about a year in that role, then I started doing some underwriting. During my last semester of school, I came on full-time to join the Underwriting team as an Assistant Underwriter. I worked with Andrew Belcher in that role for about a year and a half, slowly taking on my own accounts and learning the ins and outs of how the business works. In January 2018, CU created the Production Underwriter position and offered it to me. I’ve been in that role since.
A Typical Day Looks Like: I manage a book of business with a team, and the goal is to maintain that book from a renewal standpoint and grow it by writing new accounts. There are weeks where I’m in the office every day talking with our broker clients about new and/or renewal accounts — mostly time spent on the phone. I also spend a fair amount of time talking with our carrier partners to put these complex deals together and make all the puzzle pieces fit to ultimately be the best option for our clients and customers.
Favorite Outdoor Activity: Fly fishing
Who Inspires You? Special Forces military people probably have my highest praise. Between the adversity battled and the brotherhood shown, they are the ultimate warriors. I’m constantly reading about their stories and trying to perfect my craft in all areas of life to model it. The majority of the time I definitely fall short, but that’s why we get up and try again!
Best TV Show You’ve Watched in the Last Year? Yellowstone
Industry Associations: I’ve been the president of the Richmond Alumni Group for Gamma Iota Sigma for three years now.
Career Goals: The sky is the limit. I love the business. I’m devoted to it. I couldn’t be happier where I’ve landed with CU. The industry we serve is second to none, and I truly believe I will stay committed to it for the remainder of my career.
Vision for CU’s Future: Be the premier provider of insurance across the country for forest products.
