What is your full name?
What is your job title?
Risk Assessment and Claims Director of Operations
How long have you been in this role?
I was promoted on 11/1/2023 but have been with Continental Underwriters, Inc. since early 2019.
What does your role entail? What does a typical day look like for you?
My new role is operationally focused and entails overseeing the Risk Assessment and Claims Division’s day-to-day operations. That means evaluating and implementing processes and coordinating with other divisions within our company to develop and implement processes and procedures to help our teams operate more efficiently.
Why did you choose a career in this industry, and how did you end up in this role at Continental Underwriters, Inc.?
Almost 14 years ago, I ended up in the industry by chance (like many in insurance) and immediately recognized the growth potential. In late 2018, my husband was offered a job opportunity with a home builder in Richmond, VA, which prompted us to consider relocation.
When I began looking at job opportunities, I came across a Linkedin Job Post for a Claims and Risk Assessment Coordinator at Continental Underwriters, Inc. I decided that I was at a point in my career where I wanted to further develop my industry knowledge and explore other areas of the industry. I was intrigued by the niche market that Continental Underwriters serves and decided to take a chance on something new. I’m so glad that I did!
What is your favorite outdoor activity?
I love spending the weekend in Charlottesville visiting local wineries and taking in the scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
What are some of your career goals or accomplishments?
When I interviewed for my position at Continental Underwriters, Inc. almost five years ago, I remember Amanda Huang asking me where I saw myself in five years. I told her that I would ideally be in a leadership or training role that allowed me to lead a team and serve as a mentor.
In my almost five years at Continental Underwriters, Inc., I’ve had the opportunity to serve as a mentor and resource for my team, be involved in hiring/training/onboarding of new hires, and am now co-leading the Risk Assessment and Claims Division with Corey Bounds. Seeing those goals that I had almost five years ago come to fruition within a five-year timeframe has been really rewarding and exciting. I look forward to seeing where the next five years take me!
“Andrea’s work ethic and attention to detail is unmatched! She appreciates the fact that her name is on the line everyday and strives to represent herself, her team, and the company well at every turn.” -Corey Bounds, Risk Assessment and Claims Director of Engineering
What’s the last book you read that you loved?
“Atomic Habits” by James Clear. I love a good self-improvement book, and this is one of the best that I’ve read. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve my productivity both professionally and personally, so I love optimizing my habits and routines!
What are the three most important skills or attributes that you bring to your job?
Attention to detail, critical thinking, and integrity.
What makes you and your team different from other people who do the same jobs elsewhere?
I think that every single person on our team brings a passion and dedication to their role. That is hard to come by in this industry and most businesses in general. It’s incredible what a team can accomplish when you have a group of driven individuals who are passionate about what they do. I truly believe that our team is made up of some of the best in the business!
Which three apps on your phone have you used the most in the last year?
Instagram, Notes (I always joke that lists are my love language, so I’m in my Notes app daily), and Amazon (much to my husband’s dismay).
What are three things most people don’t know about insurance?
1. There is such a stigma around insurance companies and fair claim settlements. Despite the negative connotation surrounding claims, insurance companies want to pay claims that are owed promptly and fairly within the terms and conditions of the policy.
2. Umbrella policies are relatively inexpensive and truly so important to protecting your personal assets in the event of a liability incident.
3. There is no such thing as “full coverage.” Many people refer to full coverage as carrying comprehensive coverage, collision coverage, and the minimum liability limits required by the state for Bodily Injury (BI) and Property Damage (PD) on their auto policies. In some states, the minimum PD coverage is as low as $5,000, which won’t cover a fraction of most vehicle repairs today and could leave you personally exposed in the event of a loss.
What kinds of things motivate you to excel in your day-to-day job?
One of the things that I love the most is being able to see and feel how vital everyone’s role is to the company’s success. It is really neat to be able to see how all of the pieces fit together. It motivates me to give my best each day. We each take a tremendous amount of pride in what we do and we put our personal reputations as well as Continental Underwriters’ reputation on the line each and every day, which is another huge motivator.
